25-Year-Old Engineer with Ties to Elon Musk Gains Direct Access to Federal Payment System: Report

Concerns have arisen over the security of federal funds and taxpayer data after a 25-year-old engineer, Marko Elez, with ties to Elon Musk, was reported to have direct access to US Treasury Department systems that manage government payments, according to WIRED.

Elez, who previously worked for two of Musk’s companies, now has privileges that reportedly include the ability to write code—not just read—on the US government's Payment Automation Manager and Secure Payment System at the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS). These systems, which reside on a secure mainframe, handle government payments that represent over a fifth of the US economy.

While Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force is said to have "read-only" access to Treasury systems, sources have revealed that Elez has numerous administrator-level privileges. These elevated rights include secure shell access to servers, the ability to explore the entire file system, modify user permissions, and delete or alter critical files.

This level of access could potentially allow Elez to bypass security protocols, raising concerns that he could make significant and irreversible changes to these sensitive systems. One source expressed alarm, stating that such access could be used for more than just tasks like identifying fraudulent payments or analyzing disbursement flows.

Elez, a graduate of Rutgers University in 2021, previously worked at SpaceX focusing on telemetry, starship software, and satellite systems. He later joined Musk’s social media company, X, where he contributed to search AI. Elez also has a background in software development, specializing in distributed systems, recommendation engines, and machine learning, though he lacks prior government experience.

Neither Elez, the White House, nor Musk responded to requests for comment on the matter. In response to growing backlash, the Treasury Department affirmed that it was not halting or rejecting federal expenditures and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s payment system.
