SpaceX Launches Two Maxar Earth-Observation Satellites into Orbit (Video, Photos)

SpaceX successfully launched two Earth-imaging satellites today (Feb. 4), expanding Maxar Technologies’ WorldView Legion constellation.

The Falcon 9 rocket, carrying the WorldView Legion 5 and 6 satellites, lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 6:13 p.m. EST (2313 GMT).

Approximately eight minutes after liftoff, the Falcon 9’s first stage made a successful return to Earth, landing at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, located near KSC. This marked the fourth successful launch and landing for this particular booster.

Meanwhile, the rocket’s upper stage continued its journey, deploying the WorldView Legion 5 satellite about 49 minutes after liftoff, followed by the deployment of WorldView Legion 6 roughly an hour later, as planned.

The launch of these satellites marks a significant step in Maxar’s efforts to complete the first block of its next-generation WorldView Legion satellites. The new satellites will increase Maxar’s ability to collect very high-resolution imagery at 30 cm, helping to meet the growing demand for near real-time insights.

The WorldView Legion constellation is capable of resolving features on Earth's surface as small as 12 inches (30 cm). SpaceX had already launched the first four satellites of this constellation in 2024, with WorldView Legion 1 and 2 launched in May, and WorldView Legion 3 and 4 following in August.

This was SpaceX's second launch of the day, following an earlier launch of a batch of Starlink satellites.
