Sweden School Shooting: What We Know About the Tragic Incident That Left 10 Dead

At least 10 people have been confirmed dead following a devastating shooting at a school in Örebro, Sweden, on Tuesday, marking the deadliest mass shooting in the country's history.

Roberto Eid Forest, head of the city’s police district, reported several injuries after the gunman opened fire on the school campus. However, confirming the exact number of victims remains difficult as the investigation continues.

It is believed the gunman is among the deceased, with authorities still searching the premises for potential additional victims. The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this time.

What Happened? The police were alerted to the incident at 12:33 local time when they received reports of a shooting at a school in Örebro, a city located 200 km west of Stockholm.

The shooting occurred at Campus Risbergska, a school for adults, also known as Komvux in Sweden, which offers education to individuals who have not completed their primary or secondary education. Other schools were also located on the same premises.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots, prompting teachers to either flee or barricade themselves in their classrooms. One teacher, Maria Pegado, shared, “I saw people dragging the injured out, first one, then another. I realized it was very serious.”

Death Toll and Injuries At least 10 people have died in the attack, including the gunman. However, the police have yet to confirm a more specific number of victims as the investigation and search for more victims continue.

The number of injured remains unclear, but police chief Forest indicated that many people were hurt. Sweden's justice minister also confirmed that there were "many others injured" in the shooting.

Who Was the Gunman? The police believe the gunman, who is thought to be dead, acted alone during the shooting. According to police chief Forest, the attacker was not previously known to law enforcement and had no known connections to any criminal gangs.

When asked if the gunman was a local resident of Örebro, Forest replied, "We’re working with secret services, but as far as I know, it's a person unknown to police."
