Early Life
Irv Gotti, born Irving Lorenzo, hails from the Hollis neighborhood in Queens, New York City. He has Filipino and African-American heritage.

Career
Initially known as DJ Irv, Gotti produced the track "Can I Live" on Jay-Z's 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt. In 1997, through his influence, Def Jam signed DMX, for whom Gotti served as executive producer of It's Dark and Hell is Hot, which debuted on May 12, 1998, and achieved quadruple platinum status.

Following the success of DMX and Jay-Z, Gotti was given his own label under Def Jam, which he named Murder Inc., inspired by a logo he saw during a gangster-themed Biography segment on A&E. Murder Inc.'s first release was Ja Rule's debut album Venni Vetti Vecci (1999), with Gotti serving as executive producer for much of the album.

In 2002, Gotti released Irv Gotti Presents The Inc., featuring tracks by the label's artists, including the hit "Down 4 U". The label was involved in a feud with 50 Cent's G-Unit, Aftermath, and Shady Records during the early 2000s. The label eventually rebranded to The Inc. following the dispute.

Under The Inc., Gotti moved to Universal Motown, signing Vanessa Carlton and co-producing her 2007 album Heroes and Thieves. In 2013, Murder Inc. was relaunched under Gotti's Visionary label.

Legal Issues
In January 2003, federal and New York police agents raided Murder Inc.'s headquarters in a money-laundering investigation tied to drug lord Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff. The raid, which was part of a larger probe into the Lorenzos' alleged connections to McGriff, resulted in the seizure of documents and computers. However, no charges were filed initially. In 2005, after a lengthy investigation, Irv and his brother Chris were charged with money laundering but were acquitted in December 2005.
