Grammys: Kendrick Lamar Honors L.A. with Record of the Year Win for “Not Like Us”

Kendrick Lamar took home one of the night’s top honors, winning Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammy Awards for his track “Not Like Us.” The win comes amid an ongoing legal battle between Drake and Universal Music Group over the song.

Presented by Miley Cyrus, who joked about possibly announcing Beyoncé’s name instead, Lamar finally took the stage to accept his golden gramophone. He dedicated the award to the city of Los Angeles, saying, “Compton, Watts, Long Beach, Inglewood, Hollywood, out to the Valley, Pacoima, IE, San Bernardino, all that. This is my neck of the woods that held me down... since I was in the studio scrapping to write the best raps and all that, in order to do records like these.”

Lamar continued, “I can’t give enough thanks to these places I’ve rolled around since high school. And most importantly, the people and families out in the Palisades and Altadena. This is a true testament that we can continue to restore this city. And yeah, we gonna keep rocking.”

The Record of the Year category recognizes the best overall recording of a single song, including both performance and production. Lamar beat out competition from The Beatles, Beyoncé, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone.

“Not Like Us,” initially a diss track aimed at Drake as part of their ongoing feud, quickly became a cultural sensation, topping the Billboard Hot 100. The song is also central to a defamation lawsuit Drake has filed against Universal Music Group, the shared parent label for both artists.

The 2025 Grammy Awards, hosted by Trevor Noah, were broadcast live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
