ChatGPT is an AI-driven chatbot developed by OpenAI, initially launched in 2022. It is powered by the GPT-4o large language model (LLM) and is capable of generating responses that mimic human conversation. ChatGPT allows users to guide discussions towards specific lengths, styles, and detail levels. It has played a significant role in accelerating the AI sector, garnering widespread attention and investment. However, concerns have arisen about its potential to replace human intelligence, contribute to plagiarism, or spread misinformation.
By January 2023, ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer app, reaching over 100 million users in two months and helping drive OpenAI's valuation to $86 billion. This success prompted the emergence of competitors like Gemini, Claude, and others. Microsoft also launched its own Copilot, initially based on GPT-4. A notable collaboration between Apple Inc. and OpenAI, announced in May 2024, integrated ChatGPT into Apple’s operating systems. As of July 2024, ChatGPT’s website ranked among the 10 most-visited globally.
ChatGPT is built on OpenAI's GPT model series and fine-tuned for conversational tasks using supervised learning and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). The system continuously evaluates user prompts and responses to improve interactions.
ChatGPT was first released as a free research preview but is now offered via a freemium model. Free-tier users access GPT-4o, while premium subscriptions like "Plus," "Pro," and "Enterprise" unlock additional features, such as DALL-E 3 image generation, enhanced AI capabilities, and expanded usage limits.
Training
ChatGPT’s underlying GPT models (GPT-4, GPT-4o, and GPT-4o mini) were specifically fine-tuned for conversational tasks using human feedback. Trainers simulated both sides of conversations in supervised learning and ranked responses during reinforcement learning to further enhance performance.
In building a safety system to avoid harmful content (e.g., violence, racism), OpenAI outsourced labeling tasks to Kenyan workers, who earned below $2 per hour. This led to concerns about the ethical implications of this outsourced labor.
Initially powered by Microsoft’s Azure supercomputing infrastructure using Nvidia GPUs, OpenAI has since upgraded its infrastructure to meet growing demand. Estimated costs for maintaining ChatGPT's system have been high, with extensive use of GPUs and cooling systems.
Features and Limitations
Features: ChatGPT can perform a wide variety of tasks, including writing code, composing music, answering test questions, generating business ideas, and more. Unlike its predecessor, InstructGPT, it aims to reduce harmful and inaccurate responses. For example, if asked a false premise, ChatGPT provides context to clarify inaccuracies.
ChatGPT can store a limited amount of previous prompts to maintain conversational context. It's also integrated with external plugins for enhanced functionality, such as web browsing and code interpretation.
Limitations: Despite its capabilities, ChatGPT sometimes generates incorrect or nonsensical answers, known as "hallucinations." It can also display biases based on the training data, leading to misrepresentation of certain groups.
As of May 2024, ChatGPT's knowledge is up to date only until December 2023, with real-time information available only to premium users.
Service
OpenAI initially offered ChatGPT for free, but introduced the "ChatGPT Plus" premium service in February 2023. The service costs $20/month and offers benefits like faster response times and priority access to features.
In March 2023, paid users gained access to third-party plugins, while in September 2023, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities to include image uploading and voice input, allowing users to interact with the model through speech.
Mobile App
ChatGPT launched on iOS in May 2023 and Android in July 2023. The apps support voice input and chat history syncing, and OpenAI is working on integrating ChatGPT with Android's assistant features.
