Grammys 2025: Will Smith Makes Comeback After Chris Rock Slap, Honors Quincy Jones

Will Smith made his return to the spotlight at the 2025 Grammys, marking his first appearance at an award show since the infamous Oscars slap incident with Chris Rock in 2022. This time, he paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Quincy Jones.

To recap, it’s been a few years since Will Smith sparked worldwide conversation with his shocking actions at the 2022 Oscars, where he slapped host Chris Rock on live television. The altercation was sparked by Rock's joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia, which led to the actor’s controversial outburst.

However, Smith made his comeback on February 3, 2025, at the Grammys, where he honored the late Quincy Jones, who passed away in November 2024 at the age of 91. Smith began the tribute by introducing Herbie Hancock on the piano, followed by Cynthia Erivo, who delivered a stunning rendition of "Fly Me to the Moon."

“This past year, we lost one of the most groundbreaking and influential figures of our time: Quincy Jones, or as his friends know him, Q,” Smith began, acknowledging the 28-time Grammy winner’s immense impact. “In his 91 years, Q touched countless lives, and I have to say, he changed mine forever. You probably wouldn’t even know who Will Smith was if it wasn’t for Quincy Jones. He made so many music legends sound even greater, bringing out the best in them.”

Following Smith’s tribute, Lainey Wilson performed "Let the Good Times Roll," followed by Stevie Wonder joining Hancock for "Bluesette" and "We Are the World." The tribute concluded with Janelle Monáe’s performance of Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough.”

Quincy Jones, who was also the executive producer of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, played a pivotal role in launching Will Smith’s career.
