Nancy Mace Repeatedly Uses Anti-Trans Slur During House Hearing: 'I Don’t Really Care'

Rep. Nancy Mace, a South Carolina lawmaker, caused chaos during a House hearing by repeatedly shouting an anti-trans slur.

During a House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform meeting, Mace was listing government expenditures when Ranking Member Gerald Connolly objected to her use of the word "t*****."

Connolly addressed Mace, saying, “The gentlelady has used a phrase that is considered a slur in the LGBTQ community and the transgender community,” but Mace interrupted him, shouting, "T*****, t*****, t*****, I don't really care."

She continued, "You want penises in women's bathrooms, and I'm not going to have it," despite Connolly's efforts to allow him to speak.

The use of the slur, described by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation as one of the most extreme slurs targeting transgender people, drew widespread condemnation.

After order was restored, Connolly, a Democrat, addressed the committee, emphasizing that "we can have debate and policy discussion without offending human beings who are fellow citizens."

Mace interrupted again, saying, "Mr. Chairman, I’m not gonna be counseled by a man over men and women’s spaces, or men who have mental health issues dressing as women.”

Committee Chair James Comer, a Republican, dismissed her remark, stating he wasn’t “up to date” on “LGBTQ terminology.”

Mace’s communications director, Gabrielle Lipsky, told The Independent that "the only thing the Left has going for them is political correctness," and criticized the Left for being wrong on various issues. She added that the Left should focus on “how their failures impact the American people” rather than "obsessing over ‘mean words.’"

Mace’s remarks sparked further criticism. Briahna Joy Gray, attorney and former press secretary for Bernie Sanders' 2020 campaign, condemned Mace's outburst, calling her behavior “denigrating someone’s identity, not their behavior/political beliefs.”

This isn't the first time Mace has used the anti-trans slur. She previously posted videos using the slur in December, only to complain when they were flagged by X (formerly Twitter) for violating its conduct policies. Mace has also misgendered her colleague, Rep. Sarah McBride, the first openly trans member of Congress, and introduced a bill barring transgender women from using women’s bathrooms in the Capitol.

Mace has increasingly used anti-trans rhetoric in recent years, including past incidents such as placing a sign reading “biological” above the women’s restroom after McBride’s election.

Her stance on LGBTQ+ issues has changed notably over time. In 2021, she co-sponsored the Serving Our LGBTQ Veterans Act, which proposed establishing a center for LGBTQ veterans within the Department of Veterans Affairs. At the same time, she publicly supported "transgender equality" and described herself as a pro-LGBTQ+ rights lawmaker.

"I strongly support LGBTQ rights and equality,” Mace stated in 2021. “No one should be discriminated against.” However, she also emphasized the need to balance LGBTQ rights with religious liberty and the First Amendment, asserting that anti-discrimination laws should not infringe on religious freedom.
