Bucks Rookies Show Promising Signs in First Real NBA Action Against OKC

It was a valuable experience to see the Milwaukee Bucks' rookies thrown into the fire during Monday night’s game against the OKC Thunder.

The Bucks were severely short-handed, missing every starter except Taurean Prince and Andre Jackson Jr., along with key players Bobby Portis and Khris Middleton. With so many regulars out, coach Doc Rivers had to adjust his rotations and rely on young players who typically don’t get as much court time, especially against one of the league’s top teams.

Among these young players were AJ Johnson and Tyler Smith, the Bucks' rookie picks from this year’s draft. While both have spent most of the season in the G-League to gain experience, this was their opportunity for meaningful NBA minutes. Although it came in a tough 125-96 loss, the rookies gave fans a glimpse of what they can bring to the table.

Bucks Rookie Performance in Defeat

Johnson, who had only played 10 minutes all season before this game, stepped up and played 29 minutes against OKC. In that time, he showcased his explosive athleticism and solid shot-making. However, he also had his share of struggles, including turnovers and missed layups. He finished with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists, and one steal.

Smith also contributed, scoring 12 points with seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. He filled up the stat sheet, but like Johnson, he had his challenges—shooting just 4 of 15 from the field. For Smith, finding consistency with his shot will be key as he works to secure a role in the NBA.

By the end of the game, both Johnson and Smith, at 20 years old, gained valuable NBA experience in what was a tough matchup. Despite the loss, they showed their potential and embraced the challenge. It was a positive takeaway in a game that didn't offer much else.

Once the Bucks’ stars, including Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, return, Johnson and Smith will likely return to the G-League to continue developing and refining their skills. Considering their age and inexperience, no one expected perfection, but both players are making strong progress as they continue to grow.
