Tom Llamas will succeed Lester Holt as the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News starting this summer, the network confirmed Wednesday.
Currently a senior national correspondent and the anchor of Top Story with Tom Llamas on NBC News NOW, Llamas will continue his duties on the evening newscast while assuming the Nightly News role. Janelle Rodriguez, NBC News’ executive vice president of programming, praised Llamas for his "journalistic excellence, passionate storytelling, and unyielding integrity," qualities that align with the values of NBC Nightly News. She also noted his role in helping grow NBC News NOW into a leading streaming network.
Llamas expressed his excitement, calling the opportunity a “profound honor and one that carries tremendous responsibility,” and looked forward to working with the talented team at Nightly News to deliver important stories to viewers nightly.
In a historic first, Llamas will be the first Latino journalist to anchor the weekday edition of Nightly News, though José Díaz-Balart anchors the Saturday editions.
Lester Holt, who has been at the helm of Nightly News for the past decade, announced his departure last month, although he will remain with NBC as the principal anchor of Dateline. Holt praised Llamas and expressed his confidence that the Nightly News team would fully support him during the transition.
Llamas’ journalism career began as an intern at a local Telemundo station, eventually joining NBC News as an overnight production assistant and campaign embed. He worked his way up in the news industry, holding roles at WTVJ, WNBC, and later ABC as their chief national affairs correspondent. Llamas rejoined NBC News in 2021, continuing his impressive coverage of major global and national events.
Throughout his career, Llamas has reported on significant events such as the Israel-Hamas war, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and several major political and natural disaster stories. He has also interviewed numerous world leaders, including former President Trump, first lady Melania Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
