Melania Trump Advocates for Anti-Revenge Porn Bill on Capitol Hill

Melania Trump took to Capitol Hill on Monday, February 3, for a roundtable discussion with lawmakers and victims of revenge porn and AI-generated deepfakes. The discussion highlighted the need for legislation to address internet abuse involving non-consensual explicit imagery. This was Melania's first public speech on Capitol Hill since returning to the White House.

“I am here today with a shared goal — to protect our youth from online harm,” Melania stated. “The prevalence of online abuse impacts the daily lives of our children, families, and communities.” She further emphasized the importance of addressing this issue to ensure a safe environment for young people and expressed her hope for the eventual passage of the Take It Down Act in Congress.

What is the Take It Down Act?

The Take It Down Act, introduced by Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), seeks to make it a federal crime to publish or threaten to publish non-consensual intimate imagery, including AI-generated deepfakes. The bill, which passed the Senate earlier this year, aims to impose penalties of up to three years in prison for sharing explicit images involving minors and two years for images involving adults. Threatening to publish such images could result in penalties of up to two and a half years for minors and one and a half years for adults.

Cruz, who championed the bill, highlighted the emotional toll of revenge porn and AI-generated explicit content, particularly on young girls. “If you're a victim of revenge porn or AI-generated explicit imagery, your life changes forever,” he said. “Many of these victims are teenagers facing psychological harm from classmates, often struggling to remove such material from the internet.”

Cruz added that the Take It Down Act would provide a federal legal framework to help protect victims and prevent such harmful content from being shared.

Melania was joined by lawmakers from both parties, including California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna, as well as Republicans such as Cruz, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), and House Republican Conference Chair Lisa McClain (R-Mich.). During the roundtable, she emphasized the risks posed by AI-generated content and the growing threat to privacy in today's digital world.

"In today's AI-driven world, the threat to privacy is alarmingly high," Melania remarked. "As organizations increasingly use our data, the risk of unauthorized access and misuse rises. We must prioritize strong security measures to safeguard individual privacy."

One of the key moments of the discussion involved 15-year-old Elliston Berry, who had been targeted with non-consensual AI-generated images by her classmates. “It’s heartbreaking to witness young teens, especially girls, facing the challenges of malicious online content like deepfakes,” Melania said. “This toxic environment can be damaging, and we must prioritize their well-being by providing them with the tools and support to navigate this harmful digital space.”

Melania concluded by stressing that every young person deserves a safe space online to express themselves freely without the fear of exploitation or harm.
