The Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Series Trailer Leaked, Offering a Glimpse at What the Canceled Show Could Have Been
And... perhaps shedding some light on why it was canceled.
Back in 2023, a live-action series featuring the grown-up Powerpuff Girls was canceled by The CW after several issues plagued the project. Now, a new teaser trailer has emerged online, offering a preview of what the show might have looked like – and it’s… certainly intriguing.
The trailer, released earlier this morning on the "Lost Media Busters" YouTube channel, was later taken down by Warner Bros. Entertainment due to copyright infringement. The three-and-a-half-minute video introduces the premise of the series: Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have grown up, left home, and are now young adults. Blossom (Chloe Bennet) struggles with stress and burnout, Bubbles (Dove Cameron) turns to alcohol, and Buttercup (Yana Perrault) grows increasingly rebellious and outspoken against gender norms.
In the trailer, the trio accidentally kills a human named Mojo, forcing them to flee Townsville. Years later, they return to visit their father, Professor Utonium (Donald Faison), only to encounter Mojo’s adult son, Jojo. Now the mayor of Townsville, Jojo has brainwashed the town’s residents and seeks revenge. The trailer also features "edgy" humor, such as Bubbles making a joke about juggalos and Buttercup suggesting Jojo has a “hate-boner” for Blossom.
CW has confirmed the authenticity of the footage, though they clarified that this particular trailer was not intended for public release.
The live-action Powerpuff Girls series was first reported in 2020 but was canceled in 2023 after a series of setbacks, including a failed initial pilot and Chloe Bennet’s departure from the project. CW Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz explained that the pilot was considered a “miss,” despite the belief in the cast and writers. "We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner Studios. In this case, the pilot didn’t work. Tonally, it might’ve felt a little too campy, and it didn’t feel as grounded in reality as it could have. But we wanted to take a step back and reevaluate," he said at the time.
