Sylvester Turner Dies at 70: His Final Words to the Trump Administration Go Viral

Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-Texas) passed away late Tuesday, just two months and one day into his tenure in office, at the age of 70.

Turner, the former mayor of Houston, was elected in 2024 to succeed long-serving Representative Sheila Jackson Lee after her passing while in office.

The cause of his death has not been disclosed yet. John Whitmire, the current mayor of Houston, and Jaime Harrison, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, confirmed Turner's passing. As tributes for the late politician pour in, many are shocked by his final message to the Trump administration. Turner even attended President Trump's speech to a joint session of Congress the night he passed away.

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who was removed from the House chamber for disrupting Trump's address, recalled, "We were on the floor together last night. You never know for whom the bell tolls next." He added, “I’m a little full from losing my friend.”

Meanwhile, Harrison shared his grief on X, writing, “I’m so heartbroken to learn about the passing of my dear friend Congressman and former Mayor @SylvesterTurner!” He fondly recalled their friendship, which began during the DNC Convention Site selection process in 2018. Harrison praised Turner as “a visionary leader and advocate” and offered his condolences, saying, “I will miss my friend and he will be missed by so many in his beloved Houston, TX. May he rest in peace!”

Netizens React to Turner’s Final Message to the Trump Administration

In his last post on X, Turner introduced Angela Hernandez from his congressional district, who was advocating for her daughter, Baislee Garcia, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Chromosome 8p: Inversion/Duplication/Deletion. He also took a stand on Medicaid, writing, “Don’t mess with Medicaid.”

He further stated, “Let me be clear: any cuts to Medicaid are a direct attack on families like Angela’s. President Trump and Elon Musk’s push to gut Medicaid is nothing short of a betrayal of the most vulnerable among us. They are playing politics with children’s lives, and I will not stand for it.”

Turner’s final message has resonated with many online. Art Candee wrote, “His last words to his constituents were 'don’t mess with Medicaid.’ RIP.” Others expressed shock over his untimely death, with one commenting, “What happened to him? 70 just seems too young.” Another user reflected, “Man, it’s sad. No one should die still working. 70-year-olds should be retired, enjoying time with their grandkids, not leading the nation.”

One more commenter added, “But I think we can all agree we can get rid of the fraud in Medicaid while still taking care of those who need it most.” Another user chimed in, “Yep, please don’t take away the Medicaid slush fund, please!”
