Final Fantasy 14 Director Yoshi-P Missing From Square Enix Board of Directors After Restructuring

Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida, the director behind Final Fantasy 14, has unexpectedly been left off the list of directors at Square Enix following the company's recent management restructuring. Yoshida, who is largely credited with the game's revival after the disastrous 2010 launch, had been serving as the director ever since, overseeing multiple updates and expansions, including the recent Dawntrail. He joined Square Enix's board of directors in 2018, but it appears that role may have changed.

According to a report by Automaton, Yoshida has been listed not as a director, but as a chief executive on the Executive Management Committee. This shift raises questions about whether this is a demotion. However, other long-standing directors, such as Yoshinori Kitase and Yu Miyake, remain on the board.

What This Means for Yoshida & Square Enix

The change comes shortly after Square Enix's president and CEO, Takashi Kiryu, announced a major internal restructuring, including the appointment of new management and executive officers. However, Yoshida is still listed as a director on Square Enix’s official website, which might indicate the website hasn't been updated yet.

The restructuring is likely connected to Square Enix's recent financial struggles, as two of its flagship titles—Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth—failed to meet sales expectations. The company attributed the restructuring to "changes in the entertainment business and the company’s environment," though the specifics are unclear.

Yoshida’s Alleged Desire to Step Down from Director Role

It’s possible that Yoshida’s change in position was voluntary. He has previously expressed a desire to focus more on game development rather than corporate responsibilities. In a 2023 interview with Dot Esports, Yoshida shared that he didn’t want to be on the board of directors, stating, “It’s much more fun to just make games.” While his previous attempts to step down were denied, it seems Square Enix may have allowed him to relinquish those higher-up duties this time.

Yoshida's expertise in game development is unquestionable. In addition to leading Final Fantasy 14, he also directed the controversial Final Fantasy 16, which, despite its mixed reception, showed Square's continued trust in him to guide the franchise’s future. Yoshida has not left Square Enix, and there's no indication he's stopped working on Final Fantasy 14. It seems only his outward-facing responsibilities have shifted.
