Jazz icon Roy Ayers, best known for his timeless hit Everybody Loves the Sunshine, has passed away at the age of 84. His family confirmed his death on Tuesday, following a lengthy battle with an undisclosed illness. He passed away in New York City, though the specific nature of his illness has not been revealed.
A statement from his family shared on Facebook reads, “He lived a beautiful 84 years and will be sorely missed. His family asks for privacy during this time, and a celebration of Roy’s life will be held in the future.”
Ayers’ signature track Everybody Loves the Sunshine remains a classic, often sampled and covered by artists across hip-hop and soul genres. Renowned musicians such as Kanye West, Common, Mary J. Blige, D'Angelo, and Tyler, The Creator have drawn inspiration from his work, ensuring his influence spans generations.
His music began to reach mainstream audiences when his compositions were featured in the 1973 Pam Grier Blaxploitation film Coffy. His 1976 release Everybody Loves the Sunshine solidified his place in music history, with the track amassing over 130 million streams on Spotify to date.
