The US Senate has confirmed Linda McMahon as the new education secretary, appointing the former wrestling executive to lead a department that former President Donald Trump aims to dismantle.

The 76-year-old billionaire businesswoman and longtime Trump ally was approved with a 51-45 vote, highlighting the deep divisions over her qualifications and the administration’s education policies. McMahon, who previously led the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term, now faces the challenging task of running an agency that may eventually be abolished.

McMahon’s confirmation comes amid reports that Trump is preparing an executive order instructing her to drastically reduce the department’s operations to the legal minimum, while advocating for Congress to shut it down entirely. During her confirmation, McMahon voiced her strong support for Trump’s plan, stating that she “wholeheartedly” backs his goal of “returning education to the states, where it belongs.”

Critics have raised concerns about McMahon’s qualifications, pointing to her limited experience in education—she served for one year on Connecticut’s state board of education and as a trustee at Sacred Heart University. She also lacks a background in education policy or administration. However, McMahon currently chairs the America First Policy Institute, a Trump-aligned think tank, where many of her senior education department nominees are associated. This suggests she will have ideological allies to help implement significant changes with minimal internal resistance.

At her confirmation hearing, McMahon softened the administration's hard-line stance by pledging to protect vital programs like Title I funding and Pell Grants, while acknowledging that Congress holds the power to eliminate the department entirely.

McMahon steps into office as schools and colleges nationwide race to meet a February 28 deadline to eliminate diversity programs, or risk losing federal funding. A recent guidance from the department signals that it will not back down from its strong opposition to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives. The department has also launched a DEI reporting portal to monitor diversity programs in public schools across the country.

The education department, created by Congress under President Jimmy Carter in 1979, allocates billions of dollars to K-12 schools and oversees a $1.6 trillion federal student loan portfolio. Federal funds make up about 14% of public school budgets nationwide.

Trump’s administration has already begun overhauling the department’s operations, cutting numerous contracts through Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) and reducing the Institute of Education Sciences, which collects data on academic progress.
