Oscars 2025: Why Karla Sofía Gascón, Star of Emilia Pérez, Skipped the Red Carpet
Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of Emilia Pérez, made history as the first openly trans woman nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. However, she skipped the red carpet at the 2025 Oscars due to the controversy surrounding her resurfaced offensive tweets. The actress was even mocked for the controversy by host Conan O’Brien during his monologue.
Despite the drama, Gascón attended the ceremony but has largely stayed out of the spotlight throughout awards season, missing major events such as the SAG Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and the AFI Awards luncheon. Here’s a closer look at the controversy that led to her avoiding the press.
The Controversy Surrounding Karla Sofía Gascón’s Tweets
While Emilia Pérez earned a record 13 Oscar nominations for a non-English-language film, Gascón’s campaign faced significant setbacks after old tweets containing racist and antisemitic remarks resurfaced. The controversial tweets, which had been shared between 2020 and 2021, included offensive comments about Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars. Journalist Sarah Hagi brought attention to these posts, many of which have since been deleted.
One tweet from November 22, 2020, read, "I’m sorry, is it just my impression or are there more Muslims in Spain? Every time I pick up my daughter from school, there are more women with their hair covered and skirts down to their heels. Next year, instead of English, we’ll have to teach Arabic."
Another tweet from September 2, 2020, featured a photo of a Muslim family at a restaurant, with the caption, “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.”
Additionally, Gascón shared a tweet related to George Floyd, in which she stated, “I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys without rights and policemen to be assassins. They’re all wrong.”
Following the backlash, Gascón apologized in a CNN interview and announced that she would step back from promoting Emilia Pérez to allow the film to be appreciated for what it is.
The Fallout from the Controversy
The controversy led to several key figures distancing themselves from Gascón. Director Jacques Audiard publicly distanced himself, and both Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez expressed disappointment over the scandal. Despite the drama, Emilia Pérez remains a major contender at the Oscars.
Selena Gomez shared with Deadline Hollywood that while the scandal had affected the film’s "magic," she still wanted to "continue to be proud of what I’ve done" and "live with no regrets."
