Jimmy Johnson Announces Retirement from Fox Sports After 25 Years of NFL Coverage

NFL coaching legend and broadcaster Jimmy Johnson has revealed his retirement from Fox Sports after 25 years of covering the NFL.

The 81-year-old Pro Football Hall of Famer made the announcement during a segment on The Herd With Colin Cowherd on Monday.

Johnson, who led the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowl victories and the University of Miami to a college national championship, shared that this decision was not an easy one.

“The most fun I ever had in my career, even counting Super Bowls and national championships, was at Fox Sports,” Johnson said. “But after thinking about it for the last four or five years, I’ve made the extremely difficult decision to retire from Fox. I’m going to miss it, and I’ll miss all the guys. But I’ve had a great run over the last 31 years.”

Johnson's tenure with Fox Sports began in 1994 when he was brought on for the network’s pregame show. After a brief departure in 1996 to serve as the general manager and head coach of the Miami Dolphins, a role he held for five years, he returned to Fox in 2002.

Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks praised Johnson’s contributions in a statement on social media, calling his role vital from the very first airing of Fox NFL Sunday 31 years ago. “Jimmy Johnson has been a cherished member of the Fox Sports family, and today’s retirement news is bittersweet,” Shanks wrote.

Longtime colleague Howie Long reflected on Johnson’s impact on Fox NFL Sunday, noting their immediate connection when they first met. “We caught lightning in a bottle. Chemistry is hard to predict and duplicate. We came out of the gate at number one, and we’ve stayed there for 31 years,” Long said.

Curt Menefee, another Fox colleague, shared that Johnson had made his decision known to him last week. Unlike two years ago, when he had considered stepping away, this time Johnson was fully certain about his retirement.

“Not many people get to retire the way they want, and Jimmy certainly has,” Menefee said.

Fox Sports personality Michael Strahan posted a heartfelt message on social media: “17 seasons of fun and laughs sitting next to you. You’re one of a kind, and I’m grateful for our friendship. Enjoy fishing and having beers on the boat—you deserve it. Love you, Coach!”

Johnson replied to Strahan, saying, “Michael, I’m going to miss sitting next to you, but I’ll be watching!”

Before his broadcasting career, Johnson achieved major success as a coach, leading the Dallas Cowboys to Super Bowl victories in 1992 and 1993, and guiding the University of Miami to a national championship in 1987. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.

Menefee called Johnson’s Hall of Fame induction one of the most memorable moments in Fox Sports history. “Nothing we’ve done in 31 years of Fox Sports compares to that moment. It meant so much to Jimmy, and you could see how much it meant to the people who care about him,” he said.

Johnson’s coaching career began in 1965 as an assistant at Louisiana Tech, and he became a head coach for the first time in 1979 at Oklahoma State. In December 2023, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones inducted Johnson into the team’s Ring of Honor, recognizing his brief but impactful stint as head coach, where he led the team to two Super Bowl appearances, joining Tom Landry as the only coaches in the group alongside 19 players and two executives.
