Former Polish President Lech Walesa and Fellow Ex-Political Prisoners Express ‘Horror’ Over Trump’s Treatment of Zelenskyy

Lech Walesa, former president of Poland and Nobel laureate for his pro-democracy efforts, along with over 30 other ex-political prisoners from Poland, has signed a letter to US President Donald Trump, expressing their “horror and distaste” over his treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during their recent meeting at the White House.

The letter, which was shared publicly on Facebook on Monday, criticizes Trump’s and Vice President JD Vance's demands for Zelenskyy to express gratitude for the United States’ assistance in Ukraine's fight for freedom against Russia. "Gratitude is due to the heroic Ukrainian soldiers who shed blood in defense of the values of the free world. They are the ones who have been dying on the front lines,” the letter states.

Walesa, along with other democracy activists like Adam Michnik, Bogdan Lis, Seweryn Blumsztajn, and Władysław Frasyniuk—who were imprisoned under Poland’s Moscow-backed communist regime before 1989—expressed their distress over the conversation in the Oval Office. They described the atmosphere as reminiscent of the interrogations and courtrooms they experienced under the communist regime, stating that it "terrified" them.

The letter continued, drawing parallels between the treatment of Zelenskyy and their own experiences with the oppressive communist government: "Prosecutors and judges, commissioned by the omnipotent communist political police, also explained to us that they had all the cards in their hands, and we had none. They demanded that we cease our activities, arguing that thousands of innocent people were suffering because of us. They deprived us of freedom and civil rights because we did not agree to cooperate with the authorities and did not show them gratitude. We are shocked that you treated President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a similar way."

This letter marks a significant expression of concern from former political prisoners about the treatment of a leader fighting for democracy.
