NYPD Detective Sparks Division Over Raunchy Pole-Dancing Video

NYPD Detective Sparks Division Over Raunchy Pole-Dancing Video

A New York City Police detective is at the center of controversy after a video showing her twerking and pole dancing went viral, leaving the department divided. In the video, she is seen wearing a thong and a bra while gyrating, which has led to mixed reactions across the force.

Melissa Mercado, a detective with the NYPD's Special Victims Unit, is facing backlash after appearing in a music video published by World Hip Hop. Although Mercado is not named in the video, law enforcement sources have confirmed her identity.

The video has sparked a divided response within the department. Some believe that Mercado's actions are her personal business, while others have expressed concern and disapproval. One detective was quoted saying, “I have no words” in reaction to the video.

A police union source defended Mercado, saying, “What she’s doing has nothing to do with her role as a detective. She’s not wearing any NYPD paraphernalia, and there’s nothing in the video that identifies her as a police officer.” The source also added that if Mercado is earning money through this side gig, she would be required to file an off-duty employment application, but it shouldn’t concern the department.

On the other hand, retired NYPD Special Victims Division Chief Michael Osgood argued that while off-duty behavior is generally considered private, Mercado’s conduct was inappropriate. He stated, “I think this conduct is unbecoming a police officer, especially for someone in the Special Victims Unit.”

Social media reactions have also been varied. One person questioned, “Does this affect her ability to do her job?” while another joked, “Plot twist: She’s working undercover.” Some took a more critical approach, stating, “Probably not a good look for the department,” and “There’s no need for her to do this with all the paid details available.”

This is not the first time NYPD officers have faced controversy for their actions outside of work. In 2023, a rookie cop was criticized after being filmed dancing on the job, and in 2022, another cop was transferred after giving a lap dance to a married superior during a party.
