Strong Winter Storm to Hit Colorado's Mountains, Blizzard Conditions Expected South and East of Denver
Blizzard warnings have been issued for areas south and east of Denver, with dangerous travel conditions expected due to wind and snow from Monday night into Tuesday afternoon across Colorado’s Eastern Plains.
In the high country, widespread snow accumulation of 4-10 inches is anticipated throughout Monday. This snowfall will begin to extend across the foothills and Eastern Plains by the afternoon.
Initially, temperatures will be too warm for snow, but things will take a turn as this is Colorado’s first warm storm of the year. With marginal temperatures, the snow will be wet and heavy, creating challenging conditions. Additionally, a more favorable storm track will be required for most areas to switch over to snow. As large amounts of water fall, it absorbs heat from the environment as it evaporates, cooling the surface. A weaker storm could lead to lighter precipitation and milder temperatures.
In Denver, the storm will mostly miss the city. A slushy inch or two of snow is possible downtown, with roads likely staying wet. The southern parts of the Denver metro area will have a higher chance of accumulating an inch or two of snow.
Blizzard warnings have been issued south and east of Denver, covering portions of I-25 and I-70 across the Plains, and will remain in effect through at least Tuesday afternoon.
Strong Winds to Add to the Hazards
Another key factor in this storm will be the high winds. High Wind Warnings have been issued until 5 PM Tuesday, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph. The combination of snow and wind will create hazardous travel conditions, especially along I-70 and the Palmer Divide (the gap between Colorado Springs and Denver). While snow may not actively fall during the morning commute, blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility to under ¼ mile.
These powerful winds will make travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, even without snow or wet roads. Drivers should expect significant delays and possible closures during the early morning commute (before 8 AM).
