Oscars 2025: Sean Baker Wins Best Director for Anora; Vows to Keep Making Films for the Big Screen

Sean Baker has won the Oscar for Best Director for Anora, beating out competitors Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Luca Guadagnino (A Complete Unknown), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), and Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Two) at the 2025 Academy Awards.

The 97th Academy Awards took place on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, celebrating some of the year’s most notable films and performances. The ceremony began at 4 pm (midnight GMT), with the red carpet coverage starting at 3:30 pm (23:30 GMT). Sean Baker was awarded the Best Director trophy for his work on Anora.

The Academy Award for Best Director honors exceptional direction in film, and this year, Baker took home the prestigious trophy. In his acceptance speech, he made a passionate appeal to filmmakers, urging them to "keep making films for the big screen." He emphasized the unique communal experience of watching films in theaters, stating, "We’re all here tonight because we love movies. Where did we fall in love with movies? At the movie theater. Watching a film with an audience is an experience we can't replicate at home."

Baker also highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by movie theaters, especially independent ones, noting that thousands of screens were lost during the pandemic and continue to close. He warned that if this trend isn't reversed, a vital part of our culture could be lost. "This is my battle cry," he declared.

In his speech, Baker also expressed his gratitude to his mother for inspiring his passion for cinema, and even gave her a birthday shout-out. He credited Quentin Tarantino for introducing him to Anora star Mikey Madison, whose role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was the first time Baker saw his future collaborator on screen.

The Academy Awards have historically closely linked the Best Director and Best Picture categories, with 68 of the 89 films that won Best Picture also taking home Best Director.
