Andrew Garfield Thanks Goldie Hawn for Bringing His Late Mother Joy in Heartfelt Oscars Moment
At the 2025 Oscars, Andrew Garfield shared an emotional tribute to Goldie Hawn and his late mother. The two were paired together to present the awards for Best Animated Short Film and Best Animated Feature Film. During their introduction, Garfield, 41, expressed his gratitude to Hawn on behalf of his mother, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2019.
"There’s a person who gave my mother the most joy and comfort during her life, and tonight, I feel so fortunate to be able to thank that person from the bottom of my heart," Garfield said. "That person is Goldie Hawn."
He continued, "I can feel her smiling at us right now. You’ve given us films full of joy, lifted our spirits, and made us feel that all was right with the world time and time again."
Hawn, visibly moved by the tribute, responded to Garfield with appreciation, saying she was deeply touched. The Death Becomes Her actress also remarked on how lucky she felt to have had the opportunity to make movies and bring laughter to people, joking, "Maybe some didn't, but that's OK."
Since his mother's passing, Garfield has often honored her memory in interviews and appearances. Last year, a clip of him reflecting on grief with Sesame Street's Elmo went viral.
In a candid moment, Garfield shared, "I’m doing OK... I miss my mom today. She passed away not too long ago, and I just miss her a lot." When Elmo expressed condolences, Garfield spoke about the comfort of missing someone, explaining, "It’s kind of a gift, a lovely thing to feel because it means you really loved someone when you miss them."
Earlier in October, Garfield told USA Today that working on We Live in Time, a film exploring terminal illness, felt like part of his own "healing process." "It didn’t feel like work," he said. "It became a vehicle for me to explore what life was all about now, after living for 40 years. I realized there’s more life to live, and I want to do it well."
Both Garfield and Hawn have notable histories with the Oscars. Hawn, who attended the ceremony with partner Kurt Russell, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1970 for her role in Cactus Flower and was nominated for Best Actress in 1981 for Private Benjamin. Garfield, meanwhile, has been nominated twice for Best Actor — for Hacksaw Ridge and Tick, Tick… Boom! — but has yet to win.
