AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT ASRock Taichi 16GB OC Review (2025)
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT represents a significant leap in performance, delivering the largest generational improvement we've seen in years. Compared to the previous AMD flagship, the 7900 XTX, this mid-range GPU excels in ray tracing, matches or outperforms in rasterization, and leads the way with a next-gen upscaling solution. AMD also promises that these cards will be available at MSRP, with ample stock for gamers.
AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT: Key Specifications
Both the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 are based on the same die, with the RX 9070 being a lower-binned version with fewer cores and a lower clock speed. The major highlight here is that both versions come with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a choice that’s slower than the GDDR7 found in Nvidia cards but more affordable and readily available. Despite the use of GDDR6, the RX 9070 XT offers exceptional performance.

Unlike Nvidia, AMD did not release a reference design for the RX 9070 XT, so the version we tested is the ASRock Taichi model, which features a triple-slot cooling system. Despite its hefty design, it’s not as large as many RTX 5080 cards. Power is supplied via the controversial 12VHPWR connector, but with a total power draw of 304W (half that of the RTX 5090), concerns over cable melting are minimal. However, alternative models support the more traditional and safer 8-pin PCIe connectors.
Test Setup
The benchmarks were run on an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X-based rig with the following specs:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT ASRock Taichi 16GB OC
- GPU for Comparison: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 Founders Edition
- Motherboard: Gigabyte X670 X AX V2
- RAM: 2x 16 GB G-Skill Flare X5 @ 6000 MT/s
- SSD: Kingston KC3000
- PSU: Corsair RM850e
- Cooler: NZXT Kraken X52
- Cabinet: Corsair Obsidian 750D
RDNA 4: What's New?
RDNA 4, the architecture behind the RX 9070 XT, introduces massive changes, particularly in ray tracing and AI processing. AMD has doubled the performance of Ray Tracing per compute unit (CU) and achieved an 8x improvement in AI processing.
In terms of upscaling, the RX 9070 XT introduces FSR4, a custom AI-based upscaling technology that offers significant improvements over previous versions (FSR1 and FSR2). Unlike earlier versions, FSR4 requires hardware exclusive to the RX 9000 series, meaning only these cards support this advanced upscaler.
FSR4 is set to enhance various games, including all of Sony’s PC ports and upcoming titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Monster Hunter Wilds. Once more games officially support FSR4, further testing will reveal its full potential.
Lastly, AMD has revamped its media engine to enhance image quality for streaming and recording, although the lack of 10-bit 422 encoding means Nvidia and Intel retain an edge in professional media workflows.
Final Thoughts
With its impressive advancements in ray tracing, AI processing, and upscaling, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is a standout in the mid-range GPU market. The RX 9070 XT might not yet face direct competition from Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 5070, but it’s clear that AMD has set a new benchmark for performance and value.
