School Spirits Season 2 Finale Recap and Ending Explained: What Happened to Simon?

Kristian Ventura as Simon Elroy in School Spirits, Season 2, Episode 7, streaming on Paramount+, 2025 | Ed Araquel/Paramount+

The Season 2 Finale: What Happens Next?
The primary question throughout School Spirits Season 2 has been whether Maddie will regain control of her body from Janet. The highly anticipated season finale on Paramount+ finally answers this but also leaves viewers with even more questions. The episode doesn’t resolve everything neatly, instead setting up new mysteries and cliffhangers that suggest a potential School Spirits Season 3.

For those who need a refresher or missed some key details, here’s a breakdown of what transpired in Episode 8, titled “Fire, Talk to Me.”

Spoilers Ahead for the School Spirits Season 2 Finale! Proceed with Caution!

Mr. Martin's Return to Split River High
The finale opens with Maddie, Simon, Janet, and the other teen ghosts anxiously awaiting the arrival of Mr. Martin at Split River High. Janet insists he will return because he wants her, and the group has a plan to force him to swap bodies with Mr. Anderson and hold him accountable for his actions. They also want answers as to why he did everything he did.

When Mr. Martin arrives, they set a trap in the school auditorium, making him think he’s speaking to Janet. As he reaches out to touch what he believes is her, it’s revealed that he’s actually reaching for Maddie. Simon steps forward, and a confrontation ensues. Despite Mr. Martin gaining the upper hand, Janet unexpectedly tases him, and Mr. Anderson arrives just in time.

With Mr. Martin now subdued, Mr. Anderson pressures him to feel guilty for his actions. This strategy works, and Mr. Martin begins to crack under the emotional pressure. Eventually, they force him to switch back into Mr. Anderson’s body, much like how Janet took control of Maddie’s body. Once Mr. Martin is broken down enough, Simon pushes him into Mr. Anderson, restoring Mr. Anderson to his own body.

Mr. Anderson Takes Action
After the switch, Mr. Anderson heads to the police station to share crucial information about Maddie with Sheriff Baxter and Sandra. Meanwhile, Maddie and the group bring Mr. Martin to the fallout shelter for questioning, where he admits that there’s more to Split River High than anyone realizes.

Mr. Martin’s Confession: The Chemistry Lab Fire
Earlier in the season, Janet admitted to being responsible for the chemistry lab fire, but this episode reveals that Mr. Martin was actually the one who caused it. Nicole and Claire go to Red Pine Village nursing home to investigate further. They discover old tapes revealing that Mr. Martin deliberately started the fire out of revenge after being fired from the school. Janet’s strict father had played a role in Mr. Martin’s dismissal, and the fire was an act of retaliation. Unfortunately, it also led to Janet’s death when she unknowingly ignited gas released into the lab.

The Merging of Scars
After learning the truth, Mr. Martin pulls Janet into the fallout shelter and locks them inside. However, Janet quickly realizes that her scar has merged with Mr. Martin’s. He tells her that if she forgives him aloud, they can leave. But Janet, unsure of what to forgive, demands the truth about the fire. Meanwhile, the teen ghosts work to break into the shelter, and Simon warns Maddie that she needs to return to her body before it’s too late.

Maddie finally realizes she must act fast to save her friends. She enters her scar, where she finds herself trapped in rising water, surrounded by distorted versions of her parents. With help from Wally and the other teen ghosts, Maddie is rescued and they eventually find the door into Mr. Martin and Janet’s merged scars.

The Final Confrontation and Janet’s Decision
In the shelter, Mr. Martin reveals that he’s haunted by guilt over Janet’s death, but he can’t find peace until she crosses over. Janet vents her anger at him, but she refuses to cross over herself, explaining that she still has unfinished business. She decides to leave the merged scar, trapping Mr. Martin inside.

Maddie Returns to Her Body
Maddie finally re-enters her body, but she finds it missing, as paramedics have taken it outside. Simon desperately tries to stop them, but they don’t listen. As Maddie’s body is loaded into the ambulance, she makes a final sprint to return to it and successfully re-enters her body. Later, she wakes up in the hospital, surrounded by her family and friends, but her first question is about Simon. They reassure her that he will return soon.

The Cliffhanger: Simon in Mr. Martin’s Scar
The biggest shock of the season 2 finale comes with the cliffhanger. The day after Maddie returns to her body, Janet re-enters Mr. Martin’s scar, seeking answers. However, she’s shocked to find Simon there too. This leaves fans wondering how Simon, still alive, ended up in Mr. Martin’s scar. Did he somehow find a way to enter? Could living people enter scars under certain conditions? It’s a mystery that will likely be explored in a potential School Spirits Season 3.

Possible Explanations for Simon’s Presence in the Scar
There are several theories about how Simon ended up in Mr. Martin’s scar. One possibility is that he’s still alive and stumbled into the scar while searching for Maddie. Up until now, only spirits could enter scars, and they typically needed keys to do so. But perhaps there’s more to the school and its secrets than anyone realizes. Could living people enter scars under certain circumstances? It’s something for Season 3 to explore.

The School Spirits Season 2 finale leaves fans with more questions than answers, but it promises that the story is far from over. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next!
