Google’s Chrome Extension Purge Affects More uBlock Origin Users
Google is disabling the original uBlock Origin ad blocker for an increasing number of Chrome users, as well as other extensions that are no longer supported due to Chrome's shift to the new Manifest V3 extension specification. Google claims this change is intended to improve privacy and security. However, the shift eliminates features that some ad-blocking extensions depended on, a trade-off that Mozilla has refused to accept for Firefox.
Users have reported on Reddit and X that Chrome is disabling outdated extensions. A notification now appears in the extensions tab, alerting users that affected add-ons have been turned off and are “no longer supported.” Users can choose to delete or manage their extensions through the provided buttons.
This transition began in October with uBlock Origin's phaseout on Chromium-based browsers, but the impact has become more widespread recently. Reports from Bleeping Computer and staff at The Verge confirm that affected extensions are being disabled on various devices.
These changes come as Google moves Chrome away from the now obsolete Manifest V2, which will no longer be supported. uBlock Origin users can switch to uBlock Origin Lite, which offers more limited filtering capabilities due to Manifest V3’s restrictions on ad blocking.
The rollout of Manifest V3 will affect not only Chrome but also other Chromium-based browsers like Microsoft Edge, which is also ending support for Manifest V2. Brave has stated that it will offer only “limited” support once Manifest V2 extensions are removed from the Chrome Web Store. In contrast, Mozilla has announced that Firefox will continue to support both Manifest V2 and V3, potentially providing uBlock Origin users with an alternative browser.
