Hulu users across the US encountered significant streaming issues during the 2025 Oscars, preventing many from watching the live broadcast. Social media was flooded with reports of login failures and unexpected logouts, with over 34,000 outage complaints at the peak. Hulu acknowledged the problem and assured users that a fix was in progress. In the meantime, many viewers turned to alternative streaming services like YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream to watch the ceremony.

Hulu's outage occurred on Sunday night, coinciding with the live broadcast of the Oscars. The streaming platform, which was broadcasting the event for the first time, suffered technical failures, leaving thousands of paying customers locked out of the service.

According to Downdetector, a website that tracks service disruptions, more than 34,000 Hulu complaints were reported by 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time. By 8:30 p.m., around 17,000 users were still unable to access the service. Many received an error message reading "missing error JSON structure," indicating a server-side failure.

Frustrated users took to social media to voice their dissatisfaction. One person wrote, "Hulu owes me a damn refund right about now. All that advertisement about streaming the Oscars, only for the site not to work." Another posted, "So did anyone else’s Hulu randomly log them out and then completely fail whenever you tried to log back in?" A third user expressed, “Hey Hulu, get your act together!!! No one can watch #TheOscars right now on your service!”

Complaints also surfaced on Downdetector, with users from different locations sharing their issues. One viewer from Sarasota, Florida, said, "Down in Sarasota, FL – was working, but glitchy for the Oscar pre-show. Tried it on different devices and no luck. When I tried my phone, it said my email was invalid." Another person added, “Horrible service! No updates on what’s going on, no answer on their support lines. Starting to look for another streaming provider.”

In response, Disney, Hulu’s parent company, acknowledged the outage but did not offer a specific timeline for resolution. A spokesperson stated, “We are aware that some users are experiencing login issues. The team is actively investigating and working to resolve it. We hope to be back up and running soon.”
