Chargers Release Joey Bosa, Paving the Way for a Reunion with the 49ers

Despite both attending Ohio State and making it to the NFL, brothers Nick and Joey Bosa have never had the chance to play on the same team.

The San Francisco 49ers now have the chance to reunite the Bosa brothers after Joey was released by the Los Angeles Chargers. This potential reunion isn't just a compelling story—it could also provide the 49ers with much-needed help on their defensive line, particularly with their pass rush.

Joey, who will turn 30 in July, is entering his 10th NFL season after being drafted in the first round of the 2016 draft by the Chargers. He was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016 and went on to earn five Pro Bowl selections. However, his production has declined over the past three years, partly due to injuries.

Over the past three seasons, the older Bosa has only played 28 games, with 14 of those coming in 2024. These injury concerns could lower his market value, potentially giving the 49ers a chance to sign him at a more affordable rate. Despite his health challenges, he has still managed to record 81 pressures, 16 sacks, and 17 QB hits in 690 pass-rush snaps over the last three years.

If the 49ers can bring Joey Bosa into their defensive line as part of a major overhaul at defensive end, it could allow them to manage his role and injury issues more effectively. Adding a player like Bosa, who averaged 9.6 sacks per season over his first six years, would be a significant boost. If his market doesn't escalate beyond their reach, the 49ers should be well-positioned to bring him to the Bay Area and pair him with his brother for the first time since high school.
