Invincible Season 3's Conquest Casting Sets Up a Surprising Walking Dead Rematch

Invincible Season 3's Conquest Casting Sets Up a Surprising Walking Dead Rematch

Season 3 of Invincible just introduced the powerful Viltrumite, Conquest, setting the stage for an intense showdown in more ways than one.

The penultimate episode of the season saw Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yeun) and Earth’s heroes facing off against Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) and his army of Evil Invincibles. But just when things seemed to reach a climax, the true villain of the season emerged. Conquest, a Viltrumite warrior, arrives on Earth to confront Mark for his failure to prepare the planet for the Viltrum Empire’s takeover.

While the epic battle won’t unfold until next week, Conquest’s appearance has already set up more than just a major fight in the Invincible universe. It was revealed that the character is voiced by none other than Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the actor who famously starred alongside Steven Yeun in The Walking Dead. In that series, Morgan portrayed Negan, the infamous villain who brutally killed Yeun’s character, Glenn, with a barbed baseball bat named Lucille. This casting choice sets the stage for an exciting rematch between Yeun and Morgan, though we can only hope Mark’s character will come out on top this time.

This isn’t the first time Invincible has reunited former Walking Dead cast members, which makes sense since both shows are based on comic books written by Robert Kirkman. Khary Payton, who played King Ezekiel in The Walking Dead, voices Black Samson in Invincible. Ross Marquand (Aaron in TWD) voices several characters, including Immortal and Rudy. Lennie James (Morgan Jones in TWD) voices Darkwing, while Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha Williams in TWD) voices Green Ghost. Lauren Cohan (Maggie in TWD) voices War Woman, and Chad L. Coleman (Tyreese in TWD) and Michael Cudlitz (Abraham in TWD) also appear in the cast.

The meta nature of Morgan and Yeun’s reunion has not gone unnoticed. Kirkman, also a co-showrunner for Invincible, told Entertainment Weekly that casting Morgan felt “too great not to do,” noting that Conquest needed a lot of nuance, despite being a giant, powerful brute. He added, “I knew Jeffrey could bring that.”

Morgan, on the other hand, acknowledged the similarities between Negan and Conquest but made it clear that he aimed to differentiate the characters. He said, “I was trying to be aware of just voice inflection. It’s so easy for me to get into Negan mode after this many years.” Still, he expressed excitement about giving Yeun’s character the chance at redemption, stating, “I was just thrilled to get to be a part of it.”

Based on what we know about Conquest, Mark’s redemption may not come easily. Conquest is an immensely strong adversary, even by Viltrumite standards, and Mark will certainly have his hands full in the upcoming battle.
