Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen resigned after an investigation revealed that his personal conduct was "inconsistent" with the company’s ethics policies. Shortly after the announcement, social media buzzed with speculation about McMullen's alleged support for President Donald Trump.

Following the resignation of Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen, speculation spread across social media linking him to former President Donald Trump. The rumors are based on McMullen’s past comments in which he openly praised Trump after his 2016 victory. He had expressed optimism about the potential benefits of Trump’s presidency on the business world.

Just days after Trump's win over Hillary Clinton, McMullen appeared on CNBC and shared his excitement about a Trump-led administration. "What we are really excited about, and this would be true for any administration, is getting the economy to continue growing. Growth helps everyone, so that creates jobs for all Americans. And when people get back to work and move ahead in their careers, they obviously have more money to spend at grocery stores and everywhere else," the 64-year-old said.

Since that time, however, McMullen has not publicly commented on Trump or his political views.

Rodney McMullen’s Long History with Kroger

McMullen’s tenure at Kroger spans nearly 50 years. He started in 1978 as a part-time stock clerk and bagger at a Kroger store in Lexington, Kentucky. Over the years, he climbed the corporate ladder, becoming the company’s chief financial officer in 1995 and chief operating officer in 2009. In 2014, McMullen became Kroger’s CEO, and the following year, he was appointed chairman, succeeding David Dillon.

Following McMullen's resignation, Ronald Sargent, Kroger's lead director and former CEO of Staples, has been appointed as the interim CEO while the board searches for a permanent replacement.
