2025 Oscars Highlights: ‘Anora’ Claims Five Awards, Including Best Picture

At the 2025 Oscars, Anora emerged as a major winner, taking home five awards, including the coveted Best Picture. Adrien Brody won Best Actor for The Brutalist, while Mikey Madison secured Best Actress for Anora. Zoe Saldaña and Kieran Culkin were honored with Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

The 97th Academy Awards showcased a significant shift in the industry, with the genre-bending Anora, a raw exploration of sex work, dominating the top awards. The film's success marks a step forward for an academy that’s becoming increasingly diverse and less focused on box office numbers.

Sean Baker, the director behind Anora, won three Oscars—Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. Mikey Madison, who played the title role, won Best Actress, a victory that surprised many, as Hollywood veteran Demi Moore had been seen as the frontrunner for her performance in The Substance.

In his acceptance speech for Best Screenplay, Baker thanked the sex worker community, saying, "My deepest respect. I share this with you." Later, he dedicated his Best Director Oscar to his mother.

Despite Anora’s success, it set a record for the lowest domestic ticket sales for a Best Picture winner, grossing only $15.7 million in the U.S. and Canada—far lower than previous winners like The Hurt Locker, which earned $17 million in 2010.

Another indie film, The Brutalist, also had a strong showing. The $10 million film earned three Oscars, including Best Actor for Adrien Brody’s portrayal of a Holocaust survivor. Brody’s win marked his second Oscar, after his first in 2003 for The Pianist. In his speech, he expressed a desire for a "happier, healthier, and more inclusive world," and urged the world not to let hate go unchecked.

The success of Anora and The Brutalist reflects the Academy's ongoing efforts to diversify its membership, resulting in greater recognition for unique, non-mainstream films.

Other notable wins included Wicked, which took home Oscars for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, and Emilia Pérez, which won for Best Song and Best Supporting Actress. Dune: Part Two received two awards, for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. Conclave won Best Adapted Screenplay, while Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain.

The Best Animated Film award went to Flow, an independent Latvian movie about a courageous cat, which triumphed over The Wild Robot and Inside Out 2.

In the documentary categories, No Other Land, about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, won Best Documentary, with director Basel Andra calling for global action against injustice. The Only Girl in the Orchestra took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Short.

The ceremony was hosted by Conan O'Brien, who kept his tone light, avoiding heavy political content. The show began with a tribute to Los Angeles, which had been impacted by recent wildfires, followed by Ariana Grande’s performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Defying Gravity from Wicked.

In other moments of the night, controversies arose surrounding Emilia Pérez, which had 13 nominations but saw a drop in support due to scandals involving its star, Karla Sofía Gascón.

Meanwhile, Hulu faced technical difficulties, frustrating viewers during the live stream of the ceremony, while A Complete Unknown left empty-handed after receiving eight nominations.

The night was a reflection of the ongoing changes within the industry and the Academy, highlighting a shift towards embracing diverse, thought-provoking films.
