Tamil Nadu Teen Dies After Altercation on School Bus; Police Investigate Amid Conflicting Accounts

Police have launched an investigation into the events leading to the death of a student in Salem district’s Edappadi town, following a confrontation with a classmate on a school bus.

According to preliminary reports, an altercation occurred between the boy and a classmate on Monday evening while they were heading home on the school bus. The officer, who spoke to The Indian Express, did not confirm reports that the boy was hit on the chest, which allegedly caused him to fall and suffer a severe head injury when he hit the bus floor.

The incident occurred as the bus neared the boy’s village, Vellandivalasu. Eyewitnesses stated that the argument escalated into a fight, after which the boy collapsed inside the bus. School staff and other students rushed him to a nearby private hospital, where doctors deemed his condition critical. He was later transferred to a hospital’s ICU in Salem but succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday morning despite efforts to stabilize him.

“We are waiting for the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death,” the officer said. “There are conflicting accounts of what happened on the bus, and we are speaking to students, teachers, and the driver to piece together the details of the incident.” The officer also noted that doctors suggested the boy may have had pre-existing health issues, which could have contributed to his sudden collapse. Medical records and forensic results are being reviewed before drawing any conclusions.

Local reports indicated that the altercation may have started after one student allegedly teased another, while others suggested it could have been triggered by a dispute over seating arrangements on the bus.
