Early Life:
Saquon Rasul Quevis Barkley was born on February 9, 1997, in The Bronx, New York, to Alibay Barkley, a boxer, and Tonya Johnson. He has three brothers and two sisters. His brother Alibay Jr. was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in baseball, and his great-uncle is former WBC middleweight champion Iran Barkley.
In 2001, his family moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, seeking a safer and suburban environment, later relocating to Allentown and eventually to Coplay, Pennsylvania.
Barkley attended Whitehall High School in Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, which competes in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, a division known for producing numerous NFL and professional athletes.
During his high school career, Barkley rushed for 3,646 yards and 63 touchdowns, including 1,856 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior. He was rated as a four-star recruit and initially committed to Rutgers before switching to Penn State.
In 2014, Barkley co-won the Mr. Pennsylvania Football award for the top player in the AAA/AAAA division. He also excelled in basketball and track, winning gold in the 100-meter dash and long jump at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference meet. Additionally, Barkley set a school record in the 100-meter dash and earned personal bests in the shot put and high jump.
Barkley received multiple scholarship offers from top schools like Missouri, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and others, ultimately choosing to play for Penn State.
