After Google, Apple Maps Renames Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

After Google, Apple Maps Renames Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

Apple Maps has followed in Google’s footsteps by renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, a move made in response to a presidential order signed by US President Donald Trump on his first day in office. The decision follows Google's recent update, which made the same change a day earlier.

The name "Gulf of Mexico" had been in use for centuries, dating back to the 16th century, but President Trump expressed a preference for "Gulf of America," stating that it "has a nice ring to it." This idea was so appealing that he signed an exclusive order to rename the water body. As a result, the US government updated its official maps, and both Google and Apple Maps have now reflected the new name in their services.

While Apple and Google have made the change, Microsoft's Bing has yet to do so. According to a report from CNET, Microsoft is planning to update Bing Maps soon to align with the US Geographic Names Information System, which will adopt the "Gulf of America" name within the country.

The update is currently limited to the US, with Google Maps showing both names for the Gulf worldwide. If users search for the Gulf of Mexico, the app will display both names, with "Gulf of America" in parentheses. Apple Maps, however, has only applied the change in the US, while retaining the original name for other countries.

The name change has sparked mixed reactions. Critics question its necessity, noting the Gulf has historically been shared by the United States, Mexico, and Cuba. While the US administration argues that the new name better reflects America's influence, Mexico has condemned the decision, asserting that the US cannot unilaterally rename a body of water shared by multiple nations.

Republican lawmakers have praised Google for quickly complying with the order, while criticizing Apple for its delay. US Representative Greg Steube even took to Facebook, stating that Apple was “still lost at sea.” Now that Apple has made the change, attention is shifting to when Microsoft will follow suit.
