GG vs RCB: Deandra Dottin Makes WPL Debut, Gujarat Names Five Debutants, Perry Fit for Bengaluru

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Giants kicked off the third season of the Women's Premier League at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on February 14. RCB, aiming to defend their title, faced off against Gujarat, who are determined to improve upon their bottom finishes in the past two seasons.

RCB won the toss and opted to bowl first in the season opener. The match saw debutants from both teams, with RCB introducing three Indian players: Prema Rawat, VJ Joshitha, and Raghvi Bist. Gujarat Giants, on the other hand, named five debutants for the match, including Deandra Dottin, who was unable to play in the first two seasons of the WPL due to a controversial withdrawal after being initially picked for WPL 2023. Alongside Dottin, Priya Mishra, Kashvee Gautam, Sayali Satghare, and Simran Shaikh also made their first appearances for Gujarat.

Dottin’s inclusion marks her long-awaited debut in the tournament, while RCB’s Ellyse Perry, who had been recovering from a hip injury sustained during the Women’s Ashes, confirmed that she was fit for the game, although she would not be bowling in the early stages of the season. “I’m certainly fit for the game, but I won’t be bowling for the first part of the tournament,” Perry said ahead of the match.

Mandhana, RCB’s captain, opted to bowl first after assessing the conditions. “It’s good to be back in Baroda. Dew is a big factor, so it’s better to bowl a few overs before it comes in. We had good practice sessions, and preparation has been solid,” Mandhana said at the toss, revealing a few forced changes to the squad, including the absence of some overseas players.

Gujarat Giants’ newly-appointed captain Ashleigh Gardner was also eager to start the season. “We were going to bowl as well, but that’s okay. We’ve got a good mix of youth and experience in our team, and I’m excited to get started with five debutants,” Gardner stated.
