Gukesh Earns Hard-Fought Draw Against Alireza Firouzja After Tough Struggle

After 92 intense moves, Gukesh managed to salvage a draw from a seemingly lost position, earning applause from the playing hall. The game was the first in their classification match for 7th place at the Weissenhaus leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, held on Thursday.

While Gukesh didn't manage to beat Alireza Firouzja, the draw felt like a victory for the Indian chess prodigy, who had been winless at the luxury resort village in Germany. The applause was in recognition of Gukesh's determination to turn the game around from a completely unfavorable position.

From the start, the evaluation bar heavily favored Alireza. Gukesh, playing with black pieces, made an early mistake by choosing the wrong knight, which allowed Alireza to take control of the game. At one point, the evaluation bar was as low as it could go, signaling a clear win for the French grandmaster. Alireza had over 17 minutes remaining on his clock, while Gukesh had only 47 seconds left.

Despite being on the back foot from early in the match, the turning point came when Alireza decided to exchange rooks while being a pawn up. In the end, Gukesh’s resilience paid off as he managed to force a draw. The second game of the match will be played tomorrow, with Gukesh having the white pieces.

In other tournament results, German grandmaster Vincent Keymer, who had helped Gukesh become the world champion, defeated Fabiano Caruana in the final. In the battle for third place, Magnus Carlsen triumphed over young Uzbek star Javokhir Sindarov, while Hikaru Nakamura beat Nodirbek Abdusattorov to claim 5th place.
