Duolingo revealed that their iconic owl mascot died on February 11.
TEMPLE, Texas — Tributes and questions have flooded social media following Duolingo's announcement that their cartoon owl mascot, Duo, passed away on February 11.
"It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead," the company posted. "Authorities are currently investigating the cause of death, and we are fully cooperating. Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know?"
Duolingo is a popular language-learning platform that offers quick lessons in over 40 languages. Duo, their mascot, played a key role in the app, encouraging learners to stay on track and reminding those falling behind. Duo also appeared across social media, notably commenting on events like the Dallas Mavericks' trade of Luka Doncic and Kendrick Lamar’s remarks about Drake during the Super Bowl halftime show.
The company shared that Duo's full name was "Duo Keyshauna Renee Lingo" and that he had "many enemies." However, Duolingo requested that people refrain from posting negative comments on the announcement. In place of flowers, Duolingo asked that mourners complete a language lesson or provide their credit card details to automatically enroll in Duolingo Max, as a tribute to Duo’s memory.
