Meg Lanning Supports WPL's Decision to Play Across Four Venues; Believes It Won’t Be a Problem

On the eve of the third edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL), all five team captains addressed the media, and Delhi Capitals' skipper, Meg Lanning, expressed her support for the league's decision to host matches at four different venues. Lanning emphasized that players are accustomed to varying conditions in India, and it would not pose a problem for any team.

The 2025 edition of WPL will be held across four venues: Baroda Cricket Association Stadium in Vadodara, M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, and Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The tournament will kick off in Vadodara on February 14, with the final set to take place at Brabourne Stadium on March 15.

During the WPL Captain's Huddle hosted by ETV Bharat on Star Sports, Lanning, who represents Australia, shared her thoughts: "It’s exciting to have new venues. It’s important for women’s cricket and the WPL to expand its reach to a broader audience, and we are excited about that."

She added, "Many players have experience playing in different conditions here in India and adapt quickly, so I don’t think it will be an issue for any team. Local players will obviously have a better understanding of the conditions, but this is a great step for the game to engage more fans."

Lanning’s Delhi Capitals, who have reached the finals in both previous editions, will be aiming to go one step further this year, after losing in the finals both times. Mumbai Indians won the inaugural edition, while Royal Challengers Bangalore lifted the title in the second season.

Mumbai Indians’ captain Harmanpreet Kaur also spoke about the WPL's influence on domestic players, noting that the tournament has significantly improved the strike rates of batters in the 2024/25 domestic season. "The strike rates of batters in our domestic cricket this season were much better, and WPL was a big reason for that. Players realized that if they want to compete in this league, they need to focus on their strike rates and power-hitting abilities," said Harmanpreet, known for her aggressive batting.

Other captains, including Smriti Mandhana (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Ashleigh Gardner (Gujarat Giants), and Deepti Sharma (UP Warriorz), also shared their thoughts during the session.
