Andy Reid Takes Responsibility for Chiefs' 40-22 Loss to Eagles in Super Bowl LIX
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid took full responsibility for his team's disappointing 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night in New Orleans.
"Today was a tough day," Reid admitted. "We didn’t play well in any phase. I didn’t coach well enough. They did a great job."
Despite the loss, Reid expressed pride in his team’s effort throughout the season. "I’m proud of our guys for the fight they’ve put in all year, in all the games they've played over the last few seasons."
He added, "We’ll learn from this. Like with most tough losses, you take it as a coach and a player, learn from it, and move forward."
While the Chiefs’ hopes of becoming the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls were dashed, Reid emphasized that the sting of the loss would have been the same even without that record on the line.
"You get this far, and you’ve fought hard to get here, which is no easy feat," he said. "We invest a lot of time into this—it’s not a hobby. We’re all in, players and coaches alike."
The Chiefs’ struggles began early, as they couldn't find success against the Eagles' defense, and Mahomes threw his first playoff pick-six when Cooper DeJean intercepted a pass in the second quarter. By the time Xavier Worthy caught the Chiefs' first touchdown, Kansas City was down by 34 points.
Despite a 16-point rally in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs were unable to overcome the deficit.
While Reid’s team didn’t make history with a three-peat, Super Bowl LIX still etched his name in NFL history. The game marked his 45th career playoff appearance, surpassing former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick for the most in NFL history.
