Aaron Rodgers Responds After Being Told His New York Jets Career Is Over
The New York Jets appear ready to part ways with Aaron Rodgers after a meeting with the veteran quarterback, just days before he played in the pro-am at the WM Phoenix Open.
Rodgers was interviewed on The Golf Channel after reportedly being informed that the Jets plan to move on from him. According to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, Rodgers flew back to New Jersey last week to discuss his future with the Jets, only to be told that they were moving forward without him.
It’s speculated that Rodgers could be designated as a June 1 release, which would allow him to sign with any team as early as March 12, should he decide to continue playing. Despite the Jets' decision, his visit to New Jersey suggests that Rodgers intends to keep playing, just not with the Jets.
Rodgers made an appearance at the WM Phoenix Open, participating in the Annexus Pro-Am alongside Scottie Scheffler at TPC Scottsdale on Wednesday. According to Arizona Republic, Rodgers requested that there be "no Jets questions" during his interactions with fans, which makes sense given the reports surrounding his meeting with the team.
However, during his interview with The Golf Channel, Rodgers answered two football-related questions. When asked about the Super Bowl, he said, “It’s tough to bet against the Kansas City Chiefs.” Regarding his NFL future, he responded, “I’m just enjoying my time right now. I’ve talked with the Jets. We’ll figure things out when we figure them out.”
On a lighter note, Rodgers shared his enthusiasm for the WM Phoenix Open, calling it the “greatest event in golf” due to the vibrant atmosphere, especially at the famous 16th hole. He also spoke about the nerves involved in golf, saying, “Way, way worse here,” comparing it to playing quarterback.
Discussing his playing partner, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Rodgers added, “Scottie is the best in the world. He makes it look very easy. I enjoy watching them, listening to how they think about the course and their shots. It’s pretty impressive.” He also remarked on how small the difference is between top players, calling Scheffler “really damn good.”
