JioHotstar, the new streaming platform created by merging JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, has officially launched. This platform will offer a vast content library, including shows, movies, and live sports, with no subscription required for access.

JioHotstar Streaming Platform Launched
JioHotstar, a new streaming service created by combining JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, was launched by JioStar on Friday. The platform will host a diverse range of content from both services, including movies, shows, and live sports, as well as content from various international studios and streaming platforms. The joint venture (JV), formed in November 2024 after the successful merger of Viacom18 and Star India, has also introduced a free tier for users.
According to a press release from JioStar, JioHotstar will offer approximately 300,000 hours of content, including live sports coverage.
A Massive User Base at Launch
At launch, JioHotstar will have a combined user base of over 50 crore, which includes users from both JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. However, it remains unclear if this number accounts for duplicate accounts (users who have both JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar accounts). The platform also sports a new logo featuring the name "JioHotstar" next to an asymmetrical seven-pointed star.
Free Access, Subscription Options, and Enhanced Features
JioHotstar will be free to access for now, allowing users to watch content without needing a subscription. However, it's still uncertain whether some content will be restricted behind a paywall. The JV has stated that subscription plans will be available for users seeking an ad-free experience and enhanced features, such as streaming in higher resolution.
Existing subscribers of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar will be automatically transferred to the new platform. Upon first login, users will have the option to set up their JioHotstar subscriptions. New users can choose from a variety of subscription plans, starting at Rs. 149.
Wide Range of Content in Multiple Languages
JioHotstar will offer content in 10 Indian languages across various genres, including movies, shows, anime, documentaries, and live sports. The platform will also feature international premieres and content from major studios, including Disney, NBCUniversal Peacock, Warner Bros., Discovery HBO, and Paramount.
