Ghosh and Ahuja Lead Stunning Comeback as RCB Complete WPL’s Biggest Chase
In a thrilling match that saw the highest total and successful chase in WPL history, defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) chased down a target of 202 with ease in Vadodara.
Richa Ghosh, who had been dropped on her first ball, demonstrated that there was more to her game than just power. After Ellyse Perry’s dismissal for 57, leaving RCB needing 93 from 46 balls, Ghosh’s brilliant 64* off 26 balls injected the necessary momentum. A pivotal moment came in the 16th over when Ghosh took down Gujarat Giants captain Ashleigh Gardner, hitting her for 23 runs and shifting the game in RCB’s favor.
Kanika Ahuja, who supported Ghosh, contributed an unbeaten 30* off 13 balls. Together, the pair formed a match-winning 93-run partnership off just 37 balls, completing the chase with nine balls to spare. Their partnership overshadowed Gardner's incredible 79* from 37 balls, which had earlier propelled the Giants to a challenging total.
The Gujarat Giants had a solid start, with Renuka Singh’s early breakthrough dismissing Laura Wolvaardt for 6. However, Gardner's powerful innings kept the Giants in contention, supported by Beth Mooney's 56 from 37 balls. Despite a late surge from Deandra Dottin and Gardner, RCB’s chase proved unstoppable.
RCB's pursuit was also aided by several dropped catches and missed opportunities by the Giants, which allowed Perry to anchor their innings before Ghosh took charge. With RCB needing 93 from 46, Ghosh’s half-century off 23 balls and Ahuja's quick-fire knock sealed the win, leaving the Giants deflated.
RCB’s stunning chase solidified their status as the defending champions and gave them a dominant start to the season.
