KKR vs RCB to Kick Off IPL 2025 on March 22

The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin on Saturday, March 22, 2025. As is customary, the season opener will feature the defending champions, with Eden Gardens in Kolkata hosting the first match. The Kolkata Knight Riders, who are the reigning champions, will take the field on the inaugural night.

They will face off against Royal Challengers Bangalore, who revealed their new captain, Rajat Patidar, on Thursday. Last season's runners-up, Sunrisers Hyderabad, will play their first match at home on Sunday, March 23, against Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal. This will be an afternoon fixture.

While the full IPL schedule has been highly anticipated, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to make an official announcement. However, it is understood that the key match dates have already been shared informally with the franchises. Sources also suggest that, in keeping with tradition, the final will be held in the city of the defending champions, with Eden Gardens again hosting the final on Sunday, May 25.

After the Special General Meeting (SGM) held on January 12 in Mumbai, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla had indicated that the IPL would start on March 23. However, the dates were later revised to accommodate a Saturday start, following a request from the broadcasters. The full schedule is expected to be released in the next day or two.

In addition to the 10 regular venues—Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Mullanpur, Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, and Hyderabad—this season's matches will also be played in Guwahati and Dharamsala. Guwahati will make its IPL debut with Rajasthan Royals, who have chosen the city as their second venue, playing there on March 26 and 30. Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings will be their opponents in these evening games.

Dharamsala will host a couple of Punjab Kings' home matches, with reports suggesting that the city could feature in up to three games this season. As previously confirmed, Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator
