Over 200 Killed in Israel's Largest Strike on Gaza Since Ceasefire

On Tuesday, Israel's military conducted its most extensive airstrike on Gaza since the ceasefire with Hamas began on January 19, 2025, resulting in at least 220 deaths. The airstrikes targeted Hamas positions and occurred after weeks of stalled truce negotiations.

The Gaza Civil Defence Agency reported that the majority of the casualties were women, children, and the elderly, with about 150 others injured. The bombings affected multiple locations across Gaza, including northern Gaza, Gaza City, and several areas in the central and southern parts of the Gaza Strip.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the strikes, which they described as part of a larger campaign against Hamas terrorist targets in the region. The IDF's operation was carried out according to instructions from the Israeli political leadership.

Israel also closed all schools near the Gaza border area as a precaution.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office explained that the strikes were a response to Hamas's refusal to release hostages and its rejection of proposals from US Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and other mediators. The Israeli government emphasized that the objective of the operation was to secure the release of all hostages and meet the goals of the ongoing conflict.

Hamas, in response, accused Netanyahu of violating the ceasefire and claimed that the resumption of hostilities endangered the lives of Israeli prisoners held in Gaza. They also criticized Netanyahu for using the situation for political gain, amid his domestic crises.

A White House spokesperson confirmed that Israel consulted with the Trump administration before executing the strikes.

Ceasefire Talks Breakdown

The failure of ceasefire negotiations was due to disagreements over the implementation of the next phase of the truce. Israel wanted to extend the initial phase, which focused on hostages and prisoner exchanges, until mid-April, with the condition that Hamas's military capabilities be dismantled. Meanwhile, Hamas insisted on progressing to the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, which included further hostages' release, but only under specific terms.

The previous phase of the ceasefire had seen the release of 33 Israeli hostages and five bodies, in exchange for around 1,800 Palestinian prisoners, with Hamas still holding approximately 59 hostages.

The war began with a major Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, when they killed around 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and took 251 hostages.
