In a controversial move, President Donald Trump has revoked the Secret Service protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden, labeling the extensive security measures as "ridiculous."

Trump announced the decision on March 17, 2025, stating that Hunter Biden's security detail includes 18 agents, while Ashley Biden’s involves 13. Federal law grants Secret Service protection to former presidents and their spouses, but extended protection is typically only provided to children under 16. However, adult children often receive continued security for some time.

Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, confirming the withdrawal of protection for both Hunter and Ashley Biden: "Please be advised that, effective immediately, Hunter Biden will no longer receive Secret Service protection. Likewise, Ashley Biden, who has 13 agents, will be removed from the list."

The U.S. President also pointed out that Hunter was currently on vacation in South Africa, a country where Trump had previously suspended U.S. aid due to alleged human rights violations.

A spokesperson for the Secret Service confirmed the decision, stating: "We are aware of the President’s action to revoke protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden. The Secret Service will comply and is coordinating with the White House to ensure implementation as soon as possible."

Hunter Biden’s Scrutiny and Trump’s Retaliatory Measures

Hunter Biden has long been a target of Republican criticism, particularly after his father pardoned him for tax and gun crimes shortly before leaving office in January. Trump escalated this by declaring the pardons null and void, although the legal basis for this claim remains unclear.

This latest action by Trump comes amid a broader pattern of political retribution. Since returning to office in January, Trump has revoked the security clearances of several former officials, including ex-President Biden, and employees at law firms linked to his political opponents. He also stripped security details from high-profile figures like former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former National Security Advisor John Bolton, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

White House Response and Rationale

The White House has defended these decisions, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that individuals are not entitled to lifelong security protection or clearances. "The individuals you're mentioning are quite wealthy, so they can arrange for their own private security if they wish," Leavitt explained.

During his first term, Trump had extended Secret Service protection to all of his adult children and senior officials for six months at the cost of taxpayers, amounting to $1.7 million, according to The Washington Post.
