King Charles III to Visit Vatican for State Meeting with Pope Francis
King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom are scheduled to make a state visit to the Vatican next month, with plans for an audience with Pope Francis on April 8.
The royal couple will be in Italy from April 7–10, beginning their visit with activities at the Vatican, which include participation in the Catholic Church's 2025 Jubilee Year, according to a program released by Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.
While the Vatican has not yet confirmed the meeting between King Charles and Pope Francis, it is noted that the Pope’s schedule has been impacted by his recovery from double pneumonia. Pope Francis has been hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital for over a month, and medical staff have not provided an estimate for his discharge.
In addition to their meeting with the Pope, the King and Queen are expected to attend an ecumenical service at the Sistine Chapel focused on “Care for Creation.” During this visit, King Charles will also make his first trip to the Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, a site historically connected to English monarchs prior to the Reformation.
Members of the Choir of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal and St. George’s Chapel Choir, Windsor, will perform at both the basilica and the Sistine Chapel service. King Charles will also meet with seminarians from Britain and the Commonwealth, while Queen Camilla will meet Catholic religious women working to combat human trafficking and sexual violence.
On April 9, the royal couple will continue their state visit to Italy, where they are scheduled to meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The King will make history as the first British monarch to address a joint session of the Italian Parliament. In addition, they will attend a state banquet and lay a wreath at the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,” a war memorial located at the Altar of the Fatherland.
To mark the defense ties between the two nations as NATO allies, the Italian Air Force’s aerobatic team, “Frecce Tricolori,” will perform alongside the Royal Air Force’s “Red Arrows” in a joint flyover over Rome.
The final day of the visit, April 10, will be devoted to Ravenna, a city in Emilia-Romagna, where the King and Queen will attend a reception marking the 80th anniversary of the region’s liberation from Nazi occupation by Allied forces. The day will also feature a celebration of Ravenna’s traditional produce and cuisine.
