Lando Norris ‘Dreadful’ After First-Lap Mistake in F1 Chinese GP Sprint

Lando Norris expressed feeling "dreadful" after a first-lap mistake in the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix Sprint race left him finishing in eighth place.

Starting from sixth on the grid, Norris had already been hindered by errors during his SQ3 runs in Sprint Qualifying, which cost him a shot at pole position. Despite McLaren’s strong race pace suggesting a potential recovery, Norris made another misstep on the opening lap that dropped him to ninth.

While battling George Russell, Norris ran wide on the approach to Turn 6, inadvertently dropping a wheel into the grass, which sent him off track. He then found himself behind Yuki Tsunoda, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, and Lance Stroll. It wasn’t until two laps from the end that he passed Stroll, finishing in eighth.

When asked if his starting position affected his race, Norris acknowledged, “It certainly didn’t help. The further back you start, the harder it is. I just had a bad first lap. I ran into the grass a bit into Turn 6, lost a couple of positions, and then it was tough to make up ground.”

Despite his struggles, Norris remained optimistic about McLaren’s single-lap pace, noting, "Qualifying will be better, so I’ll be a bit more confident. But right now, in the race, I just feel dreadful. It’s a lot of work to do, but that’s the way it is."

Meanwhile, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri had a more positive Sprint, managing to overtake Max Verstappen for second place in the closing laps, though he couldn't challenge Lewis Hamilton, who took a dominant victory.

McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella admitted that Ferrari, especially Lewis Hamilton, had shown superior pace throughout the weekend. He acknowledged McLaren's struggles with tire graining at the Shanghai International Circuit, noting, “We definitely struggled with the front tires, especially Lando with more traffic. Our approach to manage the graining didn’t seem to work, so it’s a good learning experience.”
