Kate Enjoys Guinness at St. Patrick's Day Celebration
The Princess of Wales marked St. Patrick's Day by sipping half a pint of Guinness while celebrating with the Irish Guards.
Catherine, dressed in bottle-green and wearing a percher hat, presented traditional sprigs of shamrock to the officers, guardsmen, and Seamus, the Irish wolfhound mascot, during the regiment’s annual parade at Wellington Barracks.
Following the parade, the princess joined the soldiers for a drink. She was thanked for contributing to the bar tab, to which she responded, "That's the least I can do."
Having served as colonel of the regiment since 2023, Catherine had to miss last year’s celebrations due to a cancer diagnosis.
Before the parade, Catherine presented medals for long service and good conduct to soldiers recently returned from Iraq. She also took the salute as colonel during the march-past.
Afterward, she spent time in the junior ranks' dining hall, where a senior guardsman proposed a toast in her honor. While drinking half a pint of Guinness, Catherine chatted with the soldiers about their experiences during deployment.
Guardsman Barry Loughlin, who led the toast, shared, "She wanted to know how things were going with the blokes in general. She was really nice and really warm. I was kind of flustered. You could tell she had a genuine interest in us."
Catherine later visited the sergeants' mess, where she met with relatives of soldiers serving overseas, including those involved in training Ukrainian troops.
This annual event dates back to the first regimental St. Patrick’s Day celebration in 1901.
