Meet Jasmine Mooney, the actress from American Pie who was detained by ICE

Meet Jasmine Mooney, the actress from American Pie who was detained by ICE: the Canadian entrepreneur behind Holy! Water describes her experience as “deeply disturbing” and has since safely returned home.

Canadian actress Jasmine Mooney, known for her role in the American Pie franchise, was recently detained by ICE at the US border. After being held for nearly two weeks, the 35-year-old entrepreneur has safely returned home, reports CBC.

Her mother, Alexis Eagles, confirmed that Jasmine landed at Vancouver International Airport around midnight on Saturday, where she was warmly greeted by friends and family.

Mooney has shared her traumatic experience with her followers, describing it as a “deeply disturbing psychological experiment.” The actress, who has been vocal about her ordeal, mentioned on Instagram that she started writing an essay about her time in detention, which she plans to share soon. “I’m using my voice in hopes of helping others,” she said.

The incident occurred after Mooney crossed the San Ysidro border between Mexico and San Diego on March 3 and was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for having an “incomplete visa,” according to The Independent. She told ABC’s 10 News San Diego about the conditions at the Otay Mesa Detention Center: “I was placed in a cell with no blanket or pillow, just a mat, and wrapped in aluminum foil for two and a half days. Then, 30 other women and I were transferred to Arizona in the middle of the night, forced to stay awake for 24 hours, all of us chained.”

Mooney, born and raised in Yukon, Canada, was living in California for work. She had been attempting to renew her US visa at the Tijuana border crossing in Mexico when the visa was denied, leading to her detention. Her father, Stephen Mooney, shared that it is common for individuals to be pulled aside for credential checks, but Jasmine’s situation extended for hours, eventually leading to her being held for several days in various facilities.

In addition to acting, Mooney is a successful entrepreneur and co-founder of Holy! Water, a non-alcoholic beverage company that focuses on holistic health using functional mushrooms, adaptogens, nootropics, and ketones. She also consults through her business, Jasmine Tera Consulting, and was previously featured on Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch in 2024.

Before her entrepreneurial success, Mooney worked in the food and beverage industry, managing three bars in Vancouver. She made headlines in 2019 when employees from Hotel Belmont filed a human rights complaint regarding the provocative bar art she chose. She defended the artwork, calling it edgy and subjective.

In addition to her business ventures, Mooney has an acting career, with notable roles in American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (2009), Kid Cannabis, iZombie, and 37-Teen, among others.

In American Pie Presents: The Book of Love, Mooney played Jackie, a minor character.
