Gerard Butler’s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has just been released on Netflix, and director Christian Gudegast is already gearing up for the next chapter. Given how the sequel’s ending hints at a potential continuation, this news comes as no surprise. The follow-up to the first film, which revealed Donnie as the mastermind behind the heist, sees him leading a new crew to rob the World Diamond Center in France. The title Pantera references both Donnie’s new crew, The Panthers, and the task force set on bringing them down.

Much like its real-world inspiration, the 2003 Antwerp diamond heist, the team faces off against advanced security systems, raising the stakes significantly from the first movie. While Den of Thieves 2 didn’t match the box office success of its predecessor, its streaming release on Netflix offers a fresh opportunity for viewers to decide whether the film's significant changes improve the experience.

Den of Thieves 2 Now Streaming on Netflix After Theatrical Disappointment

Released in theaters just over two months ago, Den of Thieves 2 had a disappointing box office performance. The sequel to Den of Thieves (2018) debuted on January 10, 2025, and despite an initial surge, the numbers quickly declined. With a 53-day theatrical run, it was barely out of theaters before hitting Netflix. Although it didn’t perform as expected in cinemas, the film's streaming release could provide the boost it needs to find its audience.

How Den of Thieves 2 Measures Up to the Original

While neither film received widespread critical acclaim, the first Den of Thieves was met with notably worse reviews than its sequel. Den of Thieves 2 earned a 63% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, significantly higher than the original’s 41%. Despite this improvement, the sequel’s box office performance still fell short. While the first film grossed $80.5 million on a $30 million budget, Den of Thieves 2 had a $40 million budget but only earned $57.1 million, a disappointing figure for a franchise that had potential to expand.

The sequel had more room to experiment, particularly with Donnie’s character development and his relationship with Nick. It also made several shifts similar to those seen in the Fast & Furious series, including a global setting, a new criminal threat, and the inclusion of a main law enforcement character joining the heist.

Den of Thieves 3 Is Already in the Works

Though Den of Thieves 2 didn’t perform as hoped, Den of Thieves 3 is already in development. Director Christian Gudegast has revealed that the third installment will be set in Africa and based on another real-life heist. Lionsgate greenlit the project within a month of the sequel’s release, and Gudegast has already completed the script.

Though production isn’t expected to begin until 2026, the plan for the franchise indicates that Den of Thieves 3 will follow the globe-trotting pattern set by its predecessors. If the Netflix release of Den of Thieves 2 boosts its popularity, it could bode well for future installments, making them more successful both in theaters and on streaming platforms.
